This guide is solely intended for the use of a person curious about the traffic flowing across THEIR OWN line. By no means will I be held responsible for the use or misuse of this device. The device mentioned and described below is to be used to secure your own home phone line and illuminate possible flaws in the overall security of your home phone line before a would-be hacker can find them. By using this device and/or this guide you assume ALL responsibility for the outcome. Making this device with intent to use in an illegitimate manner is not recommended by myself or anybody for that matter. Use my guide for informational purposes only, as that is all it is intended for. Read below to find out how simple it is to make the perfect device to test the security and/or traffic of your home phone line.

Firstly you will need a few items prior to the construction of this device. These items are listed below:

  • A wired telephone (Not a hands-free phone)
  • A pair of wire strippers
  • A pair of wire crimpers
  • A soldering iron
  • A spare telephone cable (Must be of the RJ14 variety or any other 4-wired phone cable variety that is used in your area of residence)
  • Two alligator clips

Be sure that your telephone cable look just like the one below as most cables other than the RJ14 will not work in the device:

Now what you will need to do is find an open working space, such as a desk or a clean floor and lay out your parts.

 

Next, you will need to unclip the talk-piece from the base unit by unclipping the RJ14 cable at the base of the unit and then set aside the base unit, as it is not needed for this guide. Don’t dispose of it however, as it is a very useful device that will surely come in handy for another guide in the near future.

 

Now that you have the talk-piece seperate from the rest of the phone you can begin morphing it into your home phone snooping device. Firstly you will need to cut off the RJ14 clip and set it aside as you will need to reconnect it shortly.

 

Now get your spare RJ14 cable and cut both of the clips off of each end and then use your pair of wire strippers to strip the cut end of the wire to expose the two coloured wires. You will now need to crimp these wires to the same coloured wires coming from the talk-piece.

 

Before you have completely crimped and sealed the crimped connection you will need to attach the original RJ14 cable with the clip on one end back to the talk-piece by crimping it to the crimped connection you made with the spare cable, ensuring that all of the wire colours match up to each other and no stray wires are touching each other or bridging the connection.

 

Now, if you are certain that all of the colours are matching and all stray wires have been cleared and returned to their place then you can completely crimp the three sets of wire together in what should be similar to a “Y” shape. Now plug the telephone cable into the wall and once again check for a dial tone. If there is a dial tone then continue on to the next step

 

Next, you will need to solder your two alligator clips to the last exposed wires, which you stripped earlier. Once you have soldered the alligator clips to the wires you will need to cover the connection in electrical tape or some other kind of adhesive electricity resistant material.

 

Now, you have your very own phone bug to use on your own home line that can connect to a RJ14 wall socket or a modem or even a set of bare telephone wires (by using the alligator clips). This device works by receiving the current passed throughout the home phone line, it works because there is no verification required to become a recipient of the audio as it is passed throughout the house’s phone line system in the form of electrical charges with no exact destination; thus being picked up by any telephony device in the house that has pickup characteristics.
